The glass staircase

Cameras were everywhere. Some of them angled to follow us as the others took turns dropping down and descending. Brixton was the last to land on the top of the glass staircase. I was glad they agreed to spread out. There were too many of us to risk combining our weight to a single area.

The clear stairway lit our bodies with a soft red hue as we descended. I stopped at a secondary platform to glance over the edge again. A few more stories, and we would be on a solid surface. Gazing down for an extended period was a no-no. It was disorienting looking through a transparent surface that worked like a magnifying glass to create multiple depths of field. And, although I did not have basophobia, I understood why some would. Nobody wants to fall unless they jump.

Draven lost his balance halfway down the staircase and fell. He was nearly over the edge when Anthony took a few steps up and caught him wrist to wrist. It was a good thing we had a heavyweight with us.

“Shit,” said Draven. “Thanks, bro.”

Anthony pulled him back up. “Watch your step.”

“Yeah, no shit.”

We continued cautiously and reached the bottom intact.
