THE SECURITY OF RELEASE

Surrender can be a terrifying proposition! The ego emphatically agrees and tries to convince us that our very existence will be wiped out permanently if we succumb to surrender—like we were never here at all. The ego is actually right about this, but only our dream-figure existence is at stake. And that existence will never bring us happiness.

I find it helpful to use this daily intention: “Spirit, I only want to hear your voice today. It’s your voice that I trust.” It is possible to quietly give up on the ego without fighting the ego. To fight it would justify its existence and actually strengthen it. One of my spiritual teachers and a close friend, John Beavin, shared this truth beautifully in his Course-inspired book, The Parable of the Stars:

As it happened, then, it was the weakest, nearest burned-out, ready-to-give-up little stars that first learned the truth about what they really were, and they went from their sad condition to becoming the brightest and steadiest-shining stars. They didn’t twinkle at all anymore, because they were not trying to outshine the others. In fact, their true brightness depended on their remembering that all the billions of stars were equal.
