POOR IMPACT POSITIONS

I see two common poor impact positions. In one, the hands are leading too much. In the other, the right shoulder is too high: the classic “over the top” swing.

You have to make a sound swing to arrive at impact the way you should. There’s no time to build in compensations on your downswing. We’re trying to establish constants in our swings so we don’t have to clutter our minds with too many mechanical concerns on the golf course. Always remember that on the course the swing has to be a smooth, flowing action, not a series of paint-by-the-numbers moves.

And remember: With all clubs except the driver and putter, the bottom of the arc is just ahead of the ball. Our goal is to consistently reach the bottom of the arc at the same place every time we swing the club. With the irons it’s ball-divot.

REVIEW

→ Look at a contact point on the ball.

→ Return the clubface to where it started.

→ Hips and elbows close together at impact.
