Chapter Seventeen
Catherine squeezed her eyes shut.
This was nothing like their kiss on the bridge. This was a heart-stopping, knee-buckling moment of truth.
She kept her hands still, knowing she still didnât have his trust, knowing it was fair, knowing how much he was risking by letting his guard down again.
And then she couldnât think anymore as the kiss went from a tentative question to a full-blown answer. His mouth explored hers, and she arched her back, trying to get closer to him.
He let her hands go at last to cup her face, tipping her head backward as he traced a path of kisses down her neck. She wrapped her arms around his waist as she tried to draw him to her, but it still wasnât close enough. With so many layers of skirt between them, she needed more.
His mouth met the edge of her bodice, and her chest heaved with the unbearable delight of his breath grazing the tops of her breasts, pushed high by her corset.
âSebastian,â she sighed.
âShhh.â His hands caressed her, finding her taut nipples through the soft cloth and she let out a gasp which he silenced with his mouth.
She opened her eyes and saw his heavy with desire. âCatherine,â he murmured, âhow I want you. How I wish it wasnât time to go.â
She sighed as he placed a kiss where her dress gave way to breast. âSebastian,â she said with a moan.
âCatherine, delicious Catherine.â He pulled away reluctantly. âI think they have left.â
âThey couldnât have. Not now, when they are finally coming to some use.â
Sebastian let her go and turned to peek outside again. âYes, they are gone,â he said with a sigh. âAnd we must go too.â
She closed her eyes for a second and pushed him against the wall. He looked down at her darkly.
âCatherine, there are many ways I have imagined this happening, but this isnât one of them.â
She stepped back, feeling the warmth between her thighs as the pleasure of his words crashed into her.
He lowered his mouth to hers again, kissing her hard one last time.
Catherine took a deep breath as she straightened out her gown and hair. Sheâd look ravished despite her efforts, but there was nothing to be done for it. Catherine left the closet first to ensure that James was no longer about. Then she had to track down Eliza. If they were leaving Bath altogether, she didnât want to do it without saying goodbye at the very least.
âLeaving now? Whatever for?â she asked on hearing Catherineâs rushed words of farewell.
Catherine shook her head. âIt is a long story, I wish I could share it with you. But we need to leave not just the ball but also Bath.â
Her blue eyes shone with concern as she took Catherineâs hand. âGood heavens! I hope everything is alright.â
Catherine nodded. âYes, but itâs complicated.â
âDear Catherine, a week from now, I am heading straight back to Salisbury. We would be delighted if David and you would join us there. Do you promise me you will come if you have any need at all?â
Catherine gave her hand a squeeze.
