Chapter 12: Tele-Amp Symec

---

Ada placed a call to my relic just before midnight. She must have guessed (or known somehow) that I was still awake. “Let’s handle this now,” she said. “I planned to ask you to meet me downtown tomorrow, but now I don’t expect the place I had in mind will be open.”

“Why not?”

“There’s news of another Heart-in-the-Steam killing,” Ada sighed. “This time right inside one of the service kitchens on the Straßweg block. I expect that whole neighborhood to be under FOV lockdown quite soon.”

“The Lion’s not too far from the outskirts of New Ulm,” I offered. “If we can’t handle this over the phone, could you meet me at one of the Exclusion Border diners? The one closest to me is called Turn Back Nineteen.”

“I’ll meet you at Turn Back Nineteen in about a half hour,” she answered before hanging up.

I arrived early and drank chamomile until I heard the bell at the entrance ring to announce Ada’s appearance. She paced over and sat across from me. Instead of a greeting, she immediately declared: “I’d like to put you in touch with a skilled Tele-Amp.”

“You found me an Attuned person?”

“He might be able to shed some light on this whole situation,” Ada nodded. “And he’s looking for work, so you can put him on any investigative tasks you please.” She accepted a glass of water from the waiter and drank from it before waving the server away. She wouldn’t be here long enough for a drink order.

Ada continued: “I’ll warn you that this Tele-Amp is a bit of a strange person. He often waxes philosophical, so be careful that he doesn’t distract you.”

“Can you walk me through how Tele-Amplification works?” I asked. I was generally familiar with the idea of Attuned powers, but I’d never personally met such a person before. “These people are like clairvoyants, right? They can hear thoughts and read minds?”

Ada smiled impatiently. She plainly had better things to do than to explain the phenomenon of Mind Transistance to me.

“They cannot read minds,” she clarified. “They can only transmit ideas between two external parties. Naturally, there is a large element of implicit trust. The Tele-Amp never knows what they are sharing between the two targets. They’re not privy to it. Likewise, you as the receiver of thoughts can never be entirely sure that the Attuned person is acting in good faith.”

“Acting in good faith?”

“If I were an Attuned, and I told you I was sending you thoughts from a specific person, you’d have to take my word for it that I wasn’t actually targeting someone else instead.”

She drew from her water again before continuing. “Trust is therefore of the utmost importance, as I’ve said. I trust this Tele-Amp because he has proven himself to do reliable work. His name is Symec, by the way.”

Ada retrieved a device much like my relic from her pocketbook in order to find his contact information. I was impressed. It required a lot of money, knowledge, and luck for me to maintain a portable digital system here in New Ulm.
