CHAPTER FIFTEEN

MARCH 20, 2020

FIVE MONTHS, TWO DAYS UNTIL IMPACT…

Soon after the president made his announcement live on the George Prince Show, coverage of the impending event appeared on every nightly news channel across the country. Speculation and curiosity soon followed, as television reporters and political experts made their best guesses about exactly what this spectacle would entail. The first angle of the story involved the peculiarity that the president personally made the announcement, bypassing the usual line of press releases made by the White House public relations staff. Experts were also perplexed about the way Brighton described this event more like a party than the usual formal announcement most citizens expected from the president.

“Is Andrew Brighton’s administration going through a mid-life crisis? Is that why they’ve decided to throw a party and invite the entire country?” George Prince asked on his show the next day.

Despite the White House Press Secretary downplaying the thought that the spectacle would be like a party, most of the public had an idea what would be involved during Friday’s event. The majority of the country was excited to see exactly what would happen, not to mention the president’s further “major announcement.”

The day after Brighton’s call to Prince’s show, the country buzzed at a near feverish pitch. This was especially true in the D.C. area, which saw a dramatic influx of traffic the next day. Two days after Brighton’s initial announcement – one day before the actual event – the nation’s capital was overrun by the surge of new traffic, which caused major problems getting into and out of the city for the people who worked in D.C.

If it wasn’t for Peter Mansfield anticipating this deluge of people, finishing the preparations for the ‘spectacle’ would have been nearly impossible. Luckily, Mansfield made sure everything was in place prior to Brighton’s message on live TV.

People drove in from as north as Maine, from as south as Florida and as west as California, all hoping to gain entrance to this once-in-a-lifetime show about the station. When hotels filled up, visitors slept in their cars, something not normally tolerated by the local police, but now impossible to enforce due to the sheer volume of people doing this. Besides, with the number of people in the city doubling overnight, the police forces were just happy that peace and order were being maintained.

When Friday finally arrived, most of the city came to a near standstill. Many companies that did not serve the public were shut down for the day. The amount of public transportation increased its service runs, as those travelers lucky enough to find parking still found themselves miles away from where they needed to be, the Washington, D.C. Convention Center.

At 2.3 million square feet, the D.C. Convention Center was the largest building in the city. Spanning nearly six city blocks, the center – opened in 2003 – was still one of the largest in America nearly seventeen years later. It was so large that it housed 31 different elevators, 38 escalators and 68 public restrooms.
