With Prozac led away, the officers and I proceeded to Mary Chirichellaâs apartment. When she opened the door, she was bundled in a sweater. Worry and concern creased her face.
She led us to the big picture window that overlooked the Evergreen Gardens parking lot.
âNow Ms. Mancuso, can you tell us if the covered vehicle has been moved?â the corporal asked.
âI donât know,â I said, staring outside. âI donât remember which space the car was parked in. It mightâve been parked right where it is, or maybe it couldâve been in one of the spots on either side.â
âWere any other cars parked near the vehicle the other day?â the corporal asked.
âI canât recall. It was a whole week ago.â
Exasperation filled Maryâs tone. âWhat do you mean you canât recall? The two of us sat together in front of the window staring at Bessie for almost two hours.â
I moved closer to the glass, placing my hand upon the windowpane. I so wanted to validate Maryâs story, but all I could visualize was the gray tarp-like cover shrouding what looked like a boxy car. I turned and looked from Mary to the officers. âI honestly canât remember, not for sure. I was concentrating more on our chat. Iâm sorry, Mary.â
The two officers glanced at each other, indicating they didnât put much credence in Maryâs accusationâespecially since Iâd been unable to corroborate her story.
âKeep an eye on things, Miss Chirichella. If you see anything else suspicious, call us again.â The corporal handed Mary a business card embossed with a police badge symbol.
Mary took the card then turned to me. Her eyes seemed ready to explode with tears.
âIâm sorry. I really am. I wish I could help,â I told Mary as the police escorted me from her apartment.
