Grand Master Albert was ready to leave the celibate life—and even the entire Monastic State of the Teutonic Knights—behind. And so, unlikely as it may seem, he took Luther’s advice, renounced his vows, and married a Danish princess named Dorothea in 1526. He took the rest of Prussia with him when he went.

It is an aspect of history that is not much spoken of, but it turns out that there is a little more to the story than Albert’s own dramatic conversion. Martin Luther had been actively seeking to win over the Teutonic Knights for many years. They were, after all, the major Catholic fighting force in the area, so it only made sense for the German monk to seek to bring them over to his side as a major disrupter to use against the Vatican. And Martin Luther was nothing short of prolific in his proselytizing for the Knights to join the Protestant Reformation. In one missive directed to the Teutons, for example, he authoritatively declared:
