You would not fish in the part of the stream where the fish cannot be found, right? You want to fish where all the fish hang out.

Similarly, you’ll want to understand where the target is before you deploy your marketing, branding, and sales resources.

The marketing landscape has changed dramatically over the last seventy years. Gone is the 1950s and 1960s Madison Avenue monopoly over the content we consume. Very few businesses continue to have captive audiences to whom they can force-feed content. Today there is so much content out there, you must be intentional toward your target.

Yet waste is rampant when small businesses throw money at mindless billboards, commercials, and sponsored links on social media.

Most side hustlers should not be using these techniques. Keep it simple. Reach out to those in your network. A good place to start is the army you built in chapter two. Focus on educating the people in this network. If you are lucky enough to get someone in your network to give you an opportunity, then demonstrate that you are offering the best solution out there.

If you succeed, ask them to share their experience and the word will spread. If you fail, then apologize for falling short and ask for advice on ways to improve.

Connect with your supply chain and customers on an intimate level. Get to know them. Be deliberate in spending time with them or someone else will. Ask them questions like “What problems do you foresee a year from now?” and “How can we solve the problem together?” After they recover from the shock, continue the dialogue.
