Chapter 6

The TA Tech Stack for the Rest of Us

The world of talent acquisition technology has never been in a more confusing and overwhelming place. William Tincup, president at Recruiting Daily and overall HR and TA genius, estimates that there are more than 20,000 different HR and TA technology products on the planet, and the segment is growing at a feverish pace. It’s not surprising that most TA leaders have no idea where to start and where to go.

I will say when it comes to technology and hiring, technology is not needed to hire.

Yeah, I said it, and I’m a huge fan of the technology space in HR and TA, but we can hire employees with zero technology. Why do I make this statement? Because too many in our industry become victims to their technology stack.

“We can’t hire because our ATS is awful.” “If I just had a LinkedIn Recruiter seat, I could find the talent you need.” “We need to post our jobs on more sites if we want to compete.” “If we only had that new artificial intelligence sourcing tool, we wouldn’t have any problems hiring the employees we need.”

That’s all garbage for the most part.

If you suck at recruiting, the only thing technology will do is make you suck faster.

Technology doesn’t make a TA shop great. You first have to be able to do the basic blocking and tackling of recruiting. Too often I go into a TA shop with a new leader and the first thing she wants to focus on is changing the technology.

Usually, this happens because the team the new leader inherited is saying this is the real problem. It’s not. The real problem is that no real recruiting is taking place, but blaming technology is a great way to get the pressure off someone who doesn’t really know how to recruit effectively.

Your TA tech stack can make a good TA shop great. It can also make a weak TA shop disastrous. More times than not, I see HR and TA technology implementations struggle to live up to expectations, or completely fail, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the technology and everything to do with who is using that technology.

So, before you go changing your technology for the sake of changing technology, you need do a few things.
