Chapter Fourteen
“Skinny dipping? Honey, are you serious?” Carter turned off the car, but left the keys in the ignition. The lights clicked off, save the ones on the dash.
I nodded. I could feel my pupils dilate in the darkness and I was pretty sure that I had a bit of a crazy-eye going on, so I was glad that he might not be able to see in that much detail.
“Absolutely, I am.” I tried to make my voice as steady as I could. It was entirely possible that I was only making this decision because of my giant tub of soda and rum, but I didn’t care. I really had always wanted to skinny dip in high school, but had always been too scared that my parents or grandmother would find out and be disappointed in me.
We were adults now and there were no other cars parked in the lot, so we had the lake to ourselves.
Now was our chance.
“Now is our chance.” I said.
Carter shook his head. “You’re crazy, you know that?”
I let out a little squeal and we hopped out of the truck, locked it, and followed the path down toward the lake. There was a twenty-or-so foot dock sitting on the surface of the calm body of water. The moonlight reflected off the glassy surface and a small gust of end-of-summer wind swooped through my hair, giving me a chill that was all parts excitement and not a hint of cold.
Inhibitions decidedly elsewhere, I reached out as we walked onto the dock and grabbed onto Carter’s hand. It was strong and sure as it closed over mine and I almost felt like we were kids again, going into some new adventure, together.
That was, until it came time to take our clothes off.
We reached the end of the dock and stopped, then looked at each other. My breath was uneven and heavy despite the short walk. Oh crap. What had I gotten myself into? If I thought sitting next to the guy during a steamy movie had been hard, I’d gone and wedged myself in between two giant boulders with this “let’s take off our clothes” idea.
I closed my eyes.
The only way out was to cut off my own arm (you know, from that movie where the guy literally got himself wedged in between two boulders, except my situation was thankfully figurative). I snapped my eyes open, sucked in a deep breath, and pulled off my shirt. Carter’s eyes widened, but then his mouth pulled up into that ready-for-anything grin and he followed suit, pulling his shirt off, too.
I tried not to focus on his chest as I worked on unbuttoning my jeans. It’d been a few years since we’d gone to the beach together and the man had obviously been doing some major rowing on the weekends because his shoulders and chest were much bigger than I remembered them. And also delicious. So delicious.
Blinking, I shimmied out of my pants and turned to face the lake instead of Carter.
