Chapter Five

The library was closed by the time they reached it, but light still glowed through the frosted windows. Michael peered through the glass, shielding his eyes against the afternoon glare reflecting off the pane.

“I think there's someone back there but I can't tell for sure,” he told Sandy.

“Well, no time to be delicate about it,” Sandy replied. She drew back her fist and pounded on the door as loudly as she could. “Hey, open up! Police!”

A second later, the same elderly librarian who had aided them that morning appeared from a back office, her face set in a mask of horror. She rushed over, unlocked the automatic doors, and yanked them open.

“This is a library!” she hissed “No shouting!”

“It's a closed library,” Sandy pointed out dryly. “I apologise, but we need your attention and we need it now.”

“What could possibly be so important that it can't wait until morning?” the woman demanded, sounding irritated and impatient. “It's an hour past closing. I was about to go home.”

“Time is of the essence, ma'am,” Michael cut in, using his most commanding tone of voice. “The lives of several children are on the line.”

The woman blinked owlishly, her foul mood dissolving in an instant. “Oh my! Not those children I listed for you, I hope?”

“Them and several others,” Michael told her.

The woman beckoned them into the library’s interior, then quickly closed and locked the door behind them.

“Thank you,” Sandy said, her expression tense and grim. “Now, we need to know if there's anything in here that's international. Specifically, we need to know if you have anything that might have come from Iceland.”

“Well... me.” The librarian stared at her curiously, absently adjusting her glasses. “But I would never harm a fly.”

“You? You're Icelandic?” Sandy stared at her in surprise. “What's your name, ma'am?”

“Sigrún,” the librarian said nervously. “Sigrún Pétursdóttir. Have I done something wrong?”

“I hope not,” Sandy replied, giving her a wry smile. “Sigrún, do you know anyone by the name of Britta?”

“I don't think so?” the librarian said with a helpless shrug. “I see many people come and go. I can't remember them all.”

“It's all right.” Sandy hesitated for a second, then went straight to the point. “Ma'am, have you ever heard stories about the huldufólk?”

Sigrún laughed and nodded vigorously. “Of course! Everyone from my homeland knows about the huldufólk. You can't even build a new road without checking whether it'll disrupt their little houses. They can get quite stroppy if you're careless.”

“So we've noticed,” Sandy answered dryly. “We have reason to believe there's a huldukona trapped here, and that she's not very happy about it. She's getting desperate and hurting local kids in the process of trying to get back home. Can you think of anything that might have come from Iceland and brought an elf along for the ride?”

“What?” Sigrún froze, staring at Sandy as though seeing her for the first time. “Here? No, no, no, there can't be huldufólk here.” She shook her head anxiously and started pacing. “That is wrong.
