Chapter Nine

They spent the next few days repairing the damage to the boat as much as possible. Jim was amazed at how many bullet holes they found in the structure and reflected that they must have had charmed lives to survive without serious injury. Both Jim and Ray got their wounds bandaged and Pat was of the opinion that they had got lucky and would heal without too much infection. Andy was more realistic and said they survived because they had the right equipment and attitude to the job in hand. They took the sails down and made more permanent repairs to the mast and were able to rig a reasonable set in place of the old ones. This gave Ray a chance to crow a little as not many yachts seem to carry another set of sails in reserve. He also worked out for them that to sail to Darwin would at their pace of 5 miles an hour take them about a month or more. Jim spoke to Ray.

“I know I want to get there as quickly as possible, but if we pull into any Australian port looking like this all the security in the world won’t stop curious looking us over. I also know we’re trying to patch up all these holes but you and I both know that it needs a professional guy in a boatyard to cover up this little lot. If any police or customs see us that’s the end and you know it.” Ray smiled his secret little smile, “I told you I was making some arrangements before all this started and now they can come into play. Before we get to Darwin we’re going to meet another boat. This’ll be an old friend of mine, and he’s going to take the guns for us and I think it’ll be a good idea if you go ashore with him, I’m going to try and get this into a boatyard I know and get it repaired without anybody seeing it. If they do I’ll have to try and brazen it out. Either way it’s probably best if you aren’t with me if I get caught. This guy you’re meeting needs to keep quiet about what he does so I reckon he’ll be safe as you can get.”

“What’s he normally smuggle then?” Jim asked.

Ray looked offended. “Who said anything about smuggling?”

“Give me credit Ray, please. Do I look as if I came in on the last banana boat?”

“Yeah all right, but he’s a regular guy. He lives well up top on a farm and I think everyone knows about him but if they shop him it’s like shopping your own family up there.” He thought about it for a moment. “They probably are related if they’ve lived up there for as long as they say cos people are pretty sparse in that district.”

Jim decided that, as the man wouldn’t be smuggling anything when he met them that it would be prudent not to enquire too closely into what the guy normally smuggled.
