Sex, Lies, and Observations
Gincy called at about eight forty-five and asked if I could meet her for a drink.
Win wasnât home yetâheâd called to say he was staying late to deal with some work that had piled up while he was on his fishing tripâand I didnât have anything in particular to do, so I said yes.
Besides, since the night with Finn, Iâd felt oddly uncomfortable in my own home. Almost as if I had no right to be there.
And maybe I didnât.
I got to Flashâs a half hour later and met Danielle in the vestibule, also just arriving.
âDid she tell you why she wants to see us?â she asked, a woman on a mission.
I shrugged. âNo idea.â
Together we went inside and found Gincy slumped in one of the comfy chairs by the window facing onto Stuart Street.
âHey,â she said, almost sheepishly. âThanks for coming.â
âItâs no problem,â I said, thinking of how Iâd dragged her to that perfectly lovely, perfectly awful baby shower.
If Gincy needed help, I owed her.
We sat and gave our drink orders to the waiter. When heâd gone, Danielle folded her hands in her lap, all business.
âSpill,â she commanded.
So Gincy told us about Rob, her blind date, the Cher impersonator.
âI canât believe you went on a blind date!â Danielle hissed. âI canât believe you didnât tell us what you were up to! Do you know how dangerous that could have been? What if the guy was a rapist or something!â
âI canât believe I told you even after the fact,â Gincy muttered. âWhatâs happening to me?â
âWhatâs happening,â Danielle went on, âis that youâre learningâslowlyâto trust us. Weâre all becoming friends. Isnât it great?â
Gincy groaned but Danielle was undeterred.
âWell, I think itâs great. And donât you feel better for confessing?â
âIt wasnât a confession!â Gincy protested. âI didnât do anything wrong! If Iâd committed a crime do you think I would have told you?â
Danielle shook her head. âI think maybe you would have. Say, if you cheated on a guy you were committed to. I think it would feel good to get such an awful burden off your chest. Get some perspective. You know.â
âUh,â Gincy said, looking absolutely miserable, âspeaking of awful burdens, thereâs something else. I didnât exactly tell the truth about what happened with that guy Jason.â
Danielle gasped and quickly filled me in.
âSo, what did happen that night?â Danielle then demanded.
âNothing. I couldnât have sex with him. It felt too weird. I kept thinking about Rick and I felt all guilty. So I just left. You know, in the middle of things. Iâm not such a horrible person after all, right? At least, in terms of Rick. Iâm pretty sure Jason thinks Iâm scum.â
Danielle beamed. âI am so proud of you! Arenât you proud of Gincy, Clare? You kept your promise to Rick.â
âWe donât have a promise,â Gincy protested, but weakly.
Danielle continued to chatter on about Gincyâs moral courage. I feigned great interest in my colorful drink, hoping to hide the guilt I knew was all over my face.
