The guard stomped behind Adira, and every step grated on her nerves. She, in comparison, didn’t make a single sound as she walked through the metal corridors. It hurt her spy senses to have this brute following her around.

And she knew exactly who to blame for this situation.

Rakshasas.

He’d ordered a guard to watch her day and night because he didn’t trust her. She rolled her eyes. He’d been the one asking her to trust him, but she wasn’t about to hold it against her husband. She wouldn’t trust herself, either. Like he’d stated earlier, no one should ever trust a spy.

If he hadn’t set a guard on her, she might have thought about jumping ship and hunting the Chief on her own once more.

Pausing in front of a door, Adira sucked in a breath and placed a smile on her lips before turning around, “You won’t be needed anymore.” She told the guard.

He looked ready to argue, so she raised a hand, “I’m about to have dinner with my husband, General Rakshasas. I think he can manage watching over me from here on out, don’t you agree?”

The man’s mouth snapped shut with a nod of his head, his heels clicked together as he saluted her, and then he spun and left her.

Adira rolled her eyes again before spinning back towards the door. Raising a finger, she pressed a button beside the door and watched it swoosh open. When she stepped forward, a genuine smile spread across her face at the feast Rak had the ship’s cook whip up.

“Looks good,” Adira stated as she walked toward the table to take a seat.

“Let me.” Rak rushed to his feet and then over to her side to pull out her chair for her with a sweep of his arm.

“Thank you,” Adira said as she took a seat and let Rak assist her as she scooted the chair toward the table.

A smile crossed over Rak’s face, lifting the stern set of his general’s face. She loved seeing a smile on those skilled lips of his. Smiles weren’t known to adorn many Sri’thaen general faces’, and she assumed before her, Rak was one of them.

Rak took a seat across from her at the metal table, and she noticed he’d but his hair recently, the double-tipped ears on his head visible once more. “I would have lit some candles, but they don’t appear to come as standard military issue.”

“A problem, I’m sure you’ll fix the moment we get back to the homeworld,” Adira stated with a firm nod of her nod.

“Indeed,” Rak confirmed with yet another smile, “but until then, we will have to enjoy this food without mood lighting.”

“Don’t mind if I do.” Adira began loading up her plate with Sri’thaen foods, most that she still couldn’t name, but so far, Rak hadn’t ever served her anything she didn’t like, so she dug in with confidence. “Has the council contacted you yet?”

When silence greeted her, she looked up to see Rak shake his head.

“I find that hard to believe.
