Sophie was left alone long enough to destroy the universe.

She worked for a few hours—more than enough to complete the comprehensive labor begun by the aspects of James—and was only visited by Betty with more water and food twice. Sophie left them untouched. She was absorbed in the work, and when the work was done, she was absorbed by the dilemma. She could not unfold herself from a ball in the corner long enough to eat.

It had only taken a few nudges to turn the magic from healing to destruction. After all, entropy was the natural drive of the universe. Everything was meant to fall apart. Asking such powerful magic to wreak ruin was trivial.

Now all Sophie needed to do was cast it.

She wouldn’t need the full triad to break this universe. She had enough from them already. Enough from Lincoln. Just enough strength within herself for it.

Do it already. Don’t draw this out.

Sophie couldn’t move.

“I don’t want to do this,” she whispered to nobody. “I don’t want to be the one who causes this much pain. Why does it have to be me?”

Her heartbeat guttered like a candle flame when Betty burst into the storage room one more time. “Are you okay?” She was holding a shotgun.

“Yes, why?” Sophie asked. “What happened?”

“A Union agent is here and she’s asking for you by name.”

Betty’s hand was enough to get Sophie to her feet. It took her own strength to drag herself from that damned circle of hybridized power to reach the dining room, where Hades waited under a veil of his shadow.

Allyson Whatley stood amid billowing smoke outside Peg’s Glorified Ham and Eggs. She was pale and wavering with weakness, but her eyes still burned with hatred. It took Sophie aback to see. She had far more reason to hate this woman than the other way around, yet she didn’t feel half so vengeful as the Union agent looked.

“I trust she’s angry you escaped,” Hades said.

“Among other things.” Sophie glanced at the storage room again. The magic was smoldering in her veins, inviting her to use it. She’d woven the threads to activate it around her left fingers. She wouldn’t have to confront Allyson if she did.

The agent had Lincoln somewhere, though.

His life doesn’t matter. Cast the spell. Destroy all of this .

Betty was clinging to Hades’s arm now, her head on his shoulder, worry in her gentle eyes.

Did her life matter?

“Stay here. I’ll see what Agent Whatley wants,” Sophie said.

“Honey, no,” Betty said.

Sophie lifted her right hand, and she exhaled magic onto the fingers, willing it into being. Smaller pieces of destruction. Fragments from the hybrid circle that wouldn’t trigger the whole thing, so long as she was careful. “I won’t go defenseless.”

She stepped outside.

The fissure’s jagged edge was hundreds of meters behind Allyson, and there was no sign of the rest of the shopping center beyond. The agent’s hair was whipped by the wind that came from it. Allyson cupped a pistol in both hands, leveling it at Sophie.
