Improv works best when it stays within certain constraints. For example, in the case of comedy improv, there are very few (if any) situations where the actors suddenly switching to a nonexistent language for the duration of the show would be funny; it would be beyond absurd. Any laughter it got would die quickly, the audience tiring of not being let in on the joke. No one likes being excluded, and if the audience doesn’t have the clues to interpret what’s going on, they will be.

Give the viewers of your photograph what they need to understand the story or feel the emotion of the image. Do not assume that they know what is out of the frame, when what is out of the frame is necessary to understand the story. By all means, leave room for mystery and don’t answer every question, but give them a handle by which they can hold onto the image, something their imagination can use to fill in what remains.
