Italian Wine Names

Most Italian wines are named according to one of four formats: place name, grape variety name, grape and place name, or proprietary name.

PLACE NAME

A place name on an Italian wine label indicates that the wine is from an approved DOC or DOCG zone, and that approved grape types have been used to make it. Just about everybody knows one or two Italian place-name wines, although the fact that they are place names may not be obvious. Some of the more famous place names used for Italian wines are Chianti, Barolo, Soave, and Asti.
