Emma and Luke were in the lobby of the emergency room when Margaret and Mike rushed through the hospital’s sliding glass doors. Emma’s face was white, and Luke was holding her hand, stroking his thumb across hers. Emma popped to her feet and hurried over to Margaret. She wrapped her arms around her sister. “Thank God you’re here.”

“Where’s Grandma?” Margaret asked. “Why aren’t you with her?” The words came out harsh and sharp, punctuated by the fear coursing through Margaret’s veins. If Grandma was in the emergency room, it couldn’t be good. “How’s Harry?”

“I don’t know anything, really. They wouldn’t let us back there.” Emma glanced at the double doors. A nurse came through and all of the Monroes froze, waiting for news. But the nurse headed left, away from the lobby and the spirits in the family circle deflated. “I don’t know what’s going on. Gabby and Jake are out of town, at some work thing she’s doing. I left her a voicemail and told her to call me right away.”

Emma lowered herself onto one of the camel-colored love seats. Luke put his arm around her shoulders and drew his wife close. Margaret sat across from them in a hard visitor chair with metal arms. Alone. Mike took the chair beside Luke. Margaret told herself she wasn’t envious of Luke and Emma and their closeness in a moment when everything was scary and unknown. “What happened?”

“They were driving to the outlet mall. This guy ran a red light, I think, and hit Harry’s car on Grandma’s side.” Emma’s eyes were wide. Neither one of them needed to mention how eerily similar this accident was to Momma’s. Except Momma had died and the drunk driver who hit her came very close to dying. That wouldn’t happen to Grandma. It couldn’t. God wouldn’t be that cruel.

“Oh my God.” A chill ran down Margaret’s spine. “Is she okay?”

Emma shook her head. “I don’t know. But if they won’t let us back there…”

She didn’t need to finish the sentence for all of them to understand what that meant. If the hospital was keeping the family out, they didn’t want them to see the shape Grandma was in yet. Maybe they were just putting bandages on her or they were too busy to come get Emma and Margaret. Or maybe it was something much worse.

A silence descended over the group. The four of them sat in the waiting room, watching the double doors. Every time they opened, everyone stood up, hoping it was the doctor coming to talk to them. But it wasn’t.

Harry’s son, Roger, and his grandson, Chad, came rushing in. Emma caught them up on what little she knew. The two of them slumped into the other chairs, everyone terrified to speak their worst nightmare aloud. They just sat in worried silence.

Fear rolled through Margaret in waves. She couldn’t lose her grandmother. She just couldn’t. Grandma was the lifeblood of this family, the one who held it all together. She was mother
