Chapter Eight

“Good morning, Pinehill!” Ky used his best circus ringmaster impression to greet the crowd that gathered around the park Saturday morning. Friday had passed in a blur between his duties with the festival and spending every spare moment he could with Sierra. She’d tagged along with him a good part of the day when she wasn’t with Rob and Jenn. Rob had taken the girls snowboarding in the afternoon for a few hours, but it seemed like days had passed before Sierra had returned.

The four of them had ended up eating dinner at his favorite restaurant, the dive he’d told Sierra about on Thursday. It really did look like it was one step above demolition from the outside, but inside it was modern and clean, and they served the best burgers and barbecue in town.

After lingering there far later than he should have, Ky finally went home, saw to his chores, then went to bed, unable to sleep as he thought about Sierra. He bounded out of his warm bed early Saturday morning, eager to spend another day with her. Rob, Jenn, and Sierra met him at the annual pancake breakfast held that morning right before the snowman building contest.

He’d been given the task of introducing the mayor who would give a little speech; then Ky would read the rules of the snowman building contest. He really wanted to enter it, but no one on the committee was allowed to compete.

He’d tried to talk Sierra and Jenn into forming a team and entering the contest, but Jenn said she’d rather watch, and Sierra offered to video part of the event and turn it into a promotion for Pinehill.

Everyone was raving about the updates she’d made to the instructional flyer about how to build a snowman, and the mayor had helped him set up a big-screen television so people could watch the how-to video Sierra had made. It still amazed him at what she’d been able to accomplish in just a few hours. It was no wonder she ran a successful business.

Ky shifted his focus from Sierra to the crowd gathered around him.

“Before we get started with the annual snowman building competition, please join me in welcoming our amazing mayor!” Ky made the introduction, then stepped aside as the mayor offered a brief speech, welcoming everyone to town and encouraging them to enjoy the festivities and the fun of the ninety-eighth annual Winter Fest.

Ky returned to his position behind the mic and read the rules of the snowman building contest, then pointed to the designated areas for the various age groups. “Okay, if you are six and under, your competition area is here in front of the gazebo. Seven through eleven is to my immediate right, then the twelve to eighteen group beyond that. The amateur adults are to my left, followed by the area for our professional competitors.”

He’d never been crystal clear on what it took to be a professional snowman builder, but it didn’t matter. All he knew was that the entrants in that category created the most amazing snowmen.
