In the morning Toni dressed Jacobs in a suit of her husband's that fit well enough. She let him use her phone, which he thought was generous since he'd rebuffed her advances.
âDid you get my e-mail?â John said.
âI was glad you arrived OK,â Jessica said.
âThis is the first chance I've had to call.â
âWhat are the people like?â she wanted to know.
âIt's cold and it's dark,â John said. âThey like to drink. They're like a big extended family. We're going to church.â
âI went too,â Jessica said.
âTo church?â
âThe bird died,â she said, âand I felt I had to say something.â
âI'm sorry,â John said.
âNot as sorry as I was. I mean, we both knew there wasn't a chance, but when I saw him all flopped over in his nest my heart sank, and I cried.â
âEveryone goes to church here, I think.â
âHave you met Santa Claus?â
âI met the chief. We're staying at his place, sort of.â
âWhat do you mean, sort of?â
âI need to keep this short. It's an expensive call.â
âI can call you back,â she suggested.
âWe're running late. I just wanted to say I've missed you and I can't wait to see you.â
âReally?â Jessica said. âI thought you wanted to get away.â
âIt wasn't you,â John said. âI just needed to find out about myself. It was never you.â
âYou've had me going up and down.â
âI know,â John said. âAnd I'm sorry.â
âI lit a candle for you,â she said. âOne for the bird. One for you.â
âYou went to the Catholic church?â
âWhy not?â
âBecause they're Catholic, that's why not.â
âEskimos aren't Catholic?â
âWe're Piskipulut.â
âEpiscopalian?â she said. âLight me a candle. If they have them. One for us.â
âThey might not. But I will if you want me to.â
