“At the end of the day” (Also known as “When all is said and done”)—THE fall back cliché for the manager/leader who has no idea what to do or how to do it, but has been given the task of getting it done. Used as a “summing up”, it can be more irritating than fingernails on a chalkboard (also a cliché).

“It’s not rocket science”—Used to verbally demonstrate how easy something should be, once again by people who wouldn’t know how to do the thing with 12 years of education and a refresher course minutes before the project was undertaken.

“Basically” or “literally”—Used as a stall for time by those who don’t have the wherewithal to think fast on their feet but don’t want to sound like a complete dolt through peppering their speech with “likes“ and “you knows.”

“To be fair”—That is, without fail, almost always followed by a statement that is not only completely biased but inevitably, grossly unfair.

“Going forward”—A highly regarded preface to any sentence because it’s a clear demarcation that we will no longer be going backwards.

“To be honest”—Clearly, you’ve been lying to me from the jump and are only now going to ‘fess up. Or are you?

“let’s face it”—Because, after all, I’ve had my backside to it the entire time.

“In the pipeline”—And much like any large pipeline I’ve ever come into contact with, there’s a stench surrounding it that could remove paint.

“Touch base”—Meaning “Talk to me later” . . . or, more to the point, that I should track you down and present a case for a solution to a problem that you couldn’t possibly figure out but will happily take credit for fixing in the end. Or should I say, at the end of the day.
