Chapter 42 - Mother

‘Hello, Mother.’

‘This is unexpected,’ replied Mother. She paused. ‘If I had paid closer attention to your tactics and skills, I might have anticipated it.’ She smiled. ‘You sacrificed everyone, but you met the objective. Classic Death. My apologies. I have a lot going on.’

‘I come offering a solution and asking for help.’

Mother stopped glitching and became almost life-like. John, aka Death had her full attention.

John explained what he knew about the tōhōkai in the core and the structure they had built. Mother confirmed she was aware. They had almost stopped all missions into the core due the devastating effectiveness of the tōhōkai. Instead, they were concentrating on building up a bigger army than ever before to launch the biggest attack they had ever done.

‘I see your recruiting patterns haven’t changed,’ remarked John.

‘Children are effective. They ask fewer questions and can be led into situations more mature players are unwilling to face.’ Mother paused before continuing, ‘I don’t recall you had a problem with it before.’

‘Perhaps I’m getting old,’ replied John. ‘I have more.’

John explained about the weapons he had created and the principles behind them.

‘Clever,’ nodded Mother. ‘This changes everything. You must give us your schematics.’

‘I don’t have them in this avatar. I’ - now John paused - ‘I heard about Freetown. I’m sorry.’

Mother’s avatar froze for a number of seconds and then started moving again.

‘Yes. We have set up a new location. Just the HQ this time. I’ll send you the route to get there and you can come back as Death.’

The route appeared in John’s HUD. He would need to memorise it, but it seemed relatively simple.

‘I didn’t want to go wandering around Freecity as Death. I’ve heard the tōhōkai have a greater presence there.’

‘There are few safe places now, John. It’s been some time since we’ve made much progress in our struggle but now, we’re going backwards. It is very concerning.’

Neither of them said anything for some time.

‘It’s good to see you, John. I look forward to seeing Death again.’

‘I just want this to be over,’ sighed John. Abruptly he yawned and felt a warm sensation.

Oh shit, he thought. I think I’ve just pissed myself.

Mother sent John back to BM. His work was done. Mother was still active with a formidable army at her disposal. Armed with their new weapons they could destroy the core.
