CHAPTER EIGHT

THE CALL WAS incredibly helpful. If Sophie had ever doubted the importance of a PR department, she had been converted to the other side. After hearing her part in the story of her mom’s arrest, how she was innocent, merely house-sitting a condo, Wyatt’s team made suggestions on how often to appear in public and even where to go. Coffee shops were good. Expensive restaurants were not. And no shopping trips. She didn’t even want to give the appearance that she was spending money her mother had stolen.

She could have told them they need not worry about that. She had no money. She would not be shopping. But she kept her mouth shut and listened more than she spoke because that was how smart people learned.

After twenty more minutes of teaching her how to say, “No comment,” without looking rude or condescending, the job of crafting her statement was assigned to a youngish-looking guy who promised he would get back to her on Monday.

She thought the conversation was over, but Wyatt went into detail about what he expected the statement to accomplish and while her eyebrows rose at his high expectations, his staff nodded and told him he’d get everything he wanted.

Of course, he would.

Not only was he the boss but his life seemed to be geared toward success. Sometimes it was almost fun watching fate turn into favor for him.

She remembered how much she’d loved that when they were dating, then memories poured into her brain like gentle rain, filling her chest with longing. She’d liked them together. They weren’t exactly yin and yang, but they complemented each other. He was forceful. She was more subtle. She could pull him out of a bad mood. He could get her to come out of her shell.

He’d never thought of her as anything less than his equal. Despite her humble beginnings, they had been partners.

She’d missed that and the reminder only served to make her long for their connection.

He was feeling it too. He’d as much as said it in the pool, but his recollections seemed to be more sexual.

While hers were wistful. He was the guy of her dreams. Strong. Determined. Able to get things done. And romantic. He could be such a romantic when wooing her.

She almost sighed.

“So, everybody’s got a job to do.”

The people at the big conference table in his office nodded and said words of agreement.

“Okay, then. Get it done.”

The simple way he commanded his staff sent that weird tingle through her and she understood what he’d been saying in the pool about their sexual tension, except she would add an “or” to his proposition. Either they had to indulge the sexual needs that wove through their conversations and daily dealings, or they had to stop spending so much time together.

The second choice seemed like the wiser one.

She rose from the seat across from him in the office of the villa. “You know what? I think I’m going to take the rest of the day off.
