Chapter Eighteen
When I got to Maggieâs house, she wasnât quite ready, so Finn and I shared some cookies and milk.
He seemed excited. âI looked up Teddy Nightingaleâs birthday. . . in The Magic of Birthdays Book. Wanna see?â
His index finger acted like a bookmark.
âSure, letâs read it together.â
âBreaking free of your past will be your biggest challenge in life.â Yeah, you and me both, Teddy. The last sentence was interesting: âThere is an old adage that says, âAs ye give, so ye shall receive.ââ
With a milk moustache in place, Finn asked what I knew he would. âWhatâs that last sentence mean?â
âIt means you have to give in order to get back.â
A blank stare looked back at me.
I tried again. âItâs like that good feeling you get when you give someone a gift. Youâre giving, therefore youâre receiving.â
He giggled. âWe should just give out hundreds of presents to people, and then weâd get all sorts of stuff back.â
I broke off a piece of the last cookie, and handed it to him. âItâs not quite that easy, Finn. A real gift is one where you donât expect anything in return. To be pure, it has to come from the heart.â
By the middle of that last observation, heâd lost interest, and I couldnât blame him. Finn jumped up to get his coat and whispered, âI forgot to tell you. My friend Justinâthe one I thought Iâd sent awayâhad chicken pox. He came back to school yesterday.â I smiled and gave him a squeeze.
âLucy,â Maggie said, coming down the stairs, âdid you hear about Olivia Jakes? Word is she left her husband a note saying she wasnât cut out to be married, and just took off. Sheâs been gone since last week.â
âWow. Her husbandâs cute. Maybe I should call him.â
âLucy!â
âJust kidding. Hey, howâs Karen Lowry doing?â
âOh, I canât believe I forgot to tell you the good news. Sheâs pregnant! Isnât that great?â
All was right on Sage Street.
Maggie grabbed her keys. âOkay, kiddo. What are we going to do downtown?â
After I told her, she looked at me with raised eyebrows. It was fun seeing her try to be politically correct.
âLucy, God knows I donât believe in sheltering Finn, but. . .â she began to whisper. âHeâs only eight!â
I tried to rally. âCome on, Maggie. Itâs never too early to teach him about tolerance.â
