CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The needle slid into Miranda’s arm. It was the second dose they’d given her today. Was it still today? She wasn’t sure. Sometimes she slept and sometimes she lay awake and sometimes she couldn’t tell the difference between the two.

She could move now, Commander Onguard had given her the antidote to the paralytic, so that she would able to answer his questions. But there was no point in moving. Even were she to try and escape, there were two doctors - scientists?- in the room and she had seen two guards outside the door. She couldn’t hope to get past them.

The man in the white coat finished giving her the drugs and then he went away. Miranda lay on her back, breathing slowly in and out. The drugs made her skin feel heated from the inside, but it was only temporary. Things had gotten better before, as her body steadily became used to the drugs, they would do so again.

She had seen Charlie, though it had been only briefly, and she had been able to tell the Commander that he was still in Kiloreen, in a place called Blyght, somewhere with fences. A prison camp? She hoped not, that was no place for an elfblood.

But she had seen Spree there as well, and that had comforted her. All this she had told the Commander, for something inside her still insisted Charlie must be here. And she had known the Commander would not kill Charlie, for he needed him.

Was Charlie here, now? Soon she would know. But if not now, then soon. That magestone was still hazy in her mind, but it would be become clearer in time and then she would understand.
