Chapter 17

Sleeping pills had come a long way in the last one hundred years. In Logan’s day, people had to calculate the right time to take them, set an alarm on their screen as a reminder. One hundred years in his future, the supply on the Seacole was completely programmable.

Logan, Yrsa, Grimsaw, and a handful of others had no trouble getting to sleep. Career fighters, they knew how to rest before any battle.

But for many, sleep would be hard to achieve, knowing tomorrow might be their last. For them, Logan authorized Victor to pass out sleeping aids. Logan watched as Victor programmed the packet, changing the time display before handing out the small blue capsules.

Everyone who needed sleep fell unconscious within five minutes of each other. Logan had gone to bed a few minutes after them, waking up naturally with the sun, quietly sliding out of his bunkbed in the main farmhouse. Brushing his teeth, quickly getting himself ready for the day, he couldn’t help but sneak back into the sleeping room, checking the time on his screen.

At exactly 06:00, everyone stirred in their beds at once, the time release capsule pumping them with the same chemicals at the same time. Within one minute everyone was up and out of bed, yawning and moaning as most people do first thing in the morning.

Most of the residents of Cyborg Ranch were on the Seacole. Logan had personally made sure any and all entrances were sealed tight. Grimsaw had also remained behind with a screen and a large sledgehammer taken from the mines. It was unlikely, but anyone trying to attack the Seacole would get one big scary barbarian as a surprise welcome. Callisto wanted Dr. Laghari, so attacking the Seacole made no sense from any tactical position. But Logan wasn’t going to leave that up to chance.

The ranch was far from empty. The best learners from first aid training were all there, cyborg and clone in equal measure. The best fighters were there, of course, along with Dr. Laghari and anyone else they might need.

The three days were up. Bobby Godalming was fully healed. Logan and his crew had done everything they could to prepare for an attack. And he was certain Sheriff Callisto had done everything she could to prepare for an assault.

Bobby Godalming had been set free before everyone else had woken up. Crickett was trailing him, of course, giving updates as needed.

All that was left to do was wait.

In many ways, the hours before a battle were worse than the battle itself. The horrid build of tension. During a fight there was adrenaline pumping through the body, primal instincts taking over, even a bit of excitement when things went well.

The wait was just that. A wait. Drawn out. Somehow equal parts boring and terrifying.

Even on a world trillions of miles away from Earth, high noon was still high noon. For once, luck was on Logan’s side, the sun rising behind the big farmhouse, setting in Ghiottona.

If Callisto was dumb, she’d ride out right away, fighting with the sun in her eyes.
