Moms on the Front Lines

THAT TIME OF THE MONTH

One of the consequences of multiple pregnancies that isn’t discussed much is the effect they can have on your periods. After I had Daniel, my period took over a year to come back, even after I stopped breastfeeding. When it finally did come back it wasn’t consistent, and it was accompanied by the feeling that my entire body was being wrung out for several days before and during my actual period. I was beyond exhausted. When I asked my doctor about it, she said it could be a while before my body got back on track, and it wasn’t worrisome that my cycle had no idea how to cycle correctly.

I wanted to see if I was the only one to suffer from period issues, and once again my MOFL did not disappoint in sharing their experiences. Most of them are done having kids, and consequently many of their husbands have had vasectomies. Those women are also experiencing their first periods off birth control.

Kaysee, mother of three, felt that her periods got progressively worse after each pregnancy: “My period came back within about four months with each child because I did not produce enough milk and had to do a lot of pumping and supplementing. I do not remember my period being so heavy before. I think birth control helped with my symptoms prior to having kids. I now get so tired and have terrible cramps in my back and stomach a few days before and during! I usually have at least one day where I feel like I can barely handle my kids or even my life! TMI?”

Erika had to go searching for her period after her last pregnancy: “Mine took over two years to come back after my second baby (I breastfed for a year). That was after two rounds of estrogen (that didn’t work) and finally acupuncture and voodoo magic. Now I’m on a twenty-five-day cycle, which is not awesome.”

After hearing about all of our lost periods, Carrie felt cheated: “I got my period back after about five months with both of my kids. Even though I exclusively breastfed with both babies. I definitely got screwed in the period reprieve.”

Carrie coined a new phrase for what happened to her when she stopped taking her birth control pill after her second child: “My periods are crazy heavy, but only two days. It’s like my body wants to speed dump all my innards. Ladies beware. Vasectomy + no pill + midthirties = speed dumping. You’re welcome!”

Sarah seconded the speed dump description: “Yes! This is me post #3 and #4. Although I suspect it has more to do with age and perimenopause than pregnancy. This didn’t occur after my first two children that I had in my twenties. In my late thirties and post-vasectomy (no pill), I’m a speed dumper too.”

Sarah just mentioned perimenopause, which means she is calling us all old, which means she is now no longer part of our group. We don’t need that kind of negativity around here.
