Aubrey couldn't decide if she'd rather be a fly on the wall at Captain Cook's or just didn't want to know at all how Dillon was faring. She was just glad that she didn't have to go ask Rex herself.
She'd been surprised at his response when she told him how hurtful it was that they always teased her. He hadn't said much, but she could tell he was thinking about it. And this was a new side of Dillon that she really liked, so after it all came out, she was actually glad that she'd confided in him, and that he'd been willing to help.
And it was nice that they shared a love for animals. Dillon frequently asked for her help when they spotted anything amiss on their dive trips. He mostly brought turtles to her that he'd rescued when he was out, but over the years there had been the occasional iguana that he'd called her to help with. Some of them they'd had to take to the emergency vet clinic, and this wasn't the first turtle she'd taken to the special turtle hospital, a non-profit in the Keys. Dillon even had a special permit to transport them since he was out on the water all the time and he’d taken a certification class. They were protected, and very few people were allowed to do anything at all with them, but since the turtle hospital was in their home town, they’d been allowed to help. She'd gone enough times that she didn't even call ahead anymore.
So, she was a little surprised to meet the new vet intern. And was a little taken aback when they first brought her into the examining room, the little turtle in the box.
Aubrey introduced herself and set the box on the examining table.
"You know, you really shouldn't have tried to rescue it yourself. You should have called us, or Fish and Wildlife," was the first thing out of the woman's mouth.
Aubrey decided to give her a little leeway—she was new here, after all. Aubrey knew all the other people who worked at the hospital, and she'd never seen this person before.
"Oh, I know, but my brother and I have special permission. He runs the biggest turtle tours in the Keys and finds them a lot. Frequently, he can’t wait. And I took a certificate program, too, to help transport. We come in a lot, when he finds one that's struggling. And this little one needs some help."
The woman didn't smile, actually, but nodded in Aubrey's direction. Aubrey watched as the vet quickly and skillfully examined the little turtle, eventually removing a long thread of fishing line that was wrapped around the turtle's leg and dropping it in a bowl on the counter.
"Can't tell you how many times we see this—turtles wrapped up in line, all kinds of plastic."
Aubrey nodded and continued to watch as the vet cleaned the wound, stroking the turtle's shell and almost cooing at it.
"I know. My brother says he sees it a lot, and sometimes it's too late.
