The 4-and-a-half Frontiers of Engagement

Employee engagement

The most common results from a web search on ‘ engagement ’ (aside from engagement ring, naturally) are on the topic of employee engagement. It is the process of strengthening the relationship between employer and employee, often through the provision of a sense of a purpose that the individual can own themselves, a company culture that makes people want to be at work, and an active listening to the voice of its employees.

Professional and private

The frontier of employee engagement is a professional, financial relationship, within the closed, private realm of an organisation. It's most often a function of the HR department, although increasingly new names are being assigned to those who oversee the people part of an organisation.

On a peer level, it has much in common with inter-personal engagement (which we’ll come to shortly): colleagues will likely become friends, and relationships extend beyond professional status and become personal, and are therefore more likely to endure when a colleague transitions to another company. However for those who manage others, though they have their colleagues who are friends, they are tasked with managing personnel with whom they do not have personal connections, as is the case for department heads and executives making decisions that affect hundreds or thousands of employees.
