Key #6—Enjoy Yourself!

Many would argue that this key to service-driven leadership—enjoying yourself—is a missing ingredient in most business leadership. Businessmen and women don’t often appear to be enjoying themselves. Perhaps it’s the pressure of producing a bottom line, the worry that if they relax for even a moment, one of the balls in the air will drop.

Sometimes business leadership carries with it constant and serious health issues: hypertension, heart trouble, diabetes, stress-related disorders, leaves of absence for mental or physical health issues, disability leave or retirement, early retirement. Does this key to success—enjoying yourself—provide a magic bullet for these nationwide problems? No.

But consider this: a sense of humor and of comedy, enjoying the lighter moments, and not taking ourselves quite so seriously are all universally acknowledged to increase not only good health, but to increase life expectancy and help “cure what ails us.” I know a very successful businessman who routinely, when lunching in and not out of the office, will watch a DVD, or Blu-Ray, of an episode of the sitcoms Seinfeld or Everyone Loves Raymond. His reason is simple: “It makes me laugh, relaxes me, refreshes me, and makes me a more positive person during the afternoon’s work.”
