I squeezed Cori’s arm. “Can’t stay,” I said, and took off before she could protest. They were wheeling the first of the four bodies from the house. There wasn’t much to it. A kid.

I cut through the crowd and onto the street, dodged the flower girls, teddy bear wranglers, and prayer circles.

I ran past the memorial. It’d be a mountain in no time.

Cori caught up a couple of blocks on. “I’m sorry,” she said. “I should have realized.”

I could not speak. I picked up the pace, rounded the corner onto Skelton, and careened through the gates of Lazy Green, going as fast as I could to get as far away as I could. For once, Cori struggled to keep up with me.
