Chapter 9 OTHER CAUSAL FACTORS

“There is stability in self-destruction, in prolonging sadness as a means of escaping abstractions like happiness. Rock bottom is a surprisingly comfortable place to lay your head. Looking up from the depths of another low often seems a lot safer than wondering when you’ll fall again. Falling feels awful. I’d rather fucking fly.”

—Kris Kidd

The root of our self-sabotage is based on how we think, how we respond to the approach-avoidance conflict, and how, based on those two things, we learn or connect the dots between our situation and the outcome. These aspects of self-sabotage are extremely significant, as they involve processes that we can’t readily control, like the release of dopamine or our deeply rooted beliefs about our realities.

But there are other factors that contribute to self-sabotage, too, and these can be instrumental in making it more or less likely to happen. It’s worth taking a look at some of those.
