ANDREA DROVE HOME, full of piss, vinegar, and salad. She took Route 1 instead of the local roads so she could unleash her frustration on the accelerator. Since the Odyssey could barely crack fifty miles per hour, the desired effect felt anticlimactic. JoJo hadn’t stopped crying. Andrea turned right, onto Princeton-Hightstown Road.

Lunch hadn’t gone as she’d hoped, but at least the Cellulitists were now all on notice.

JoJo grunted in agreement. Or she had to take a poop.

The baby turned bright red and released a load into her diaper. It immediately made the inside of the Odyssey smell like a barn.

“Son of a bitch, JoJo, c’mon!” she said. “You’re not the one who ate the feta cheese!”

JoJo laughed.

Andrea cracked open the windows and let the late-September air whistle through. The humidity of the previous week had broken and it was finally starting to feel like fall. She loved autumn; the drying and dying of the leaves, to her, had always meant the opportunity for renewal. There was something buzzing inside her. She had felt it for months. An impending sense of freedom and of new possibilities. The old was withering and dying, with renewal on the horizon.

She knew now that proving Molly had killed Derek would rupture her relationship with her friends and seriously impact her husband and her family.

“So what if it does?” Andrea muttered.
