'Five minutes before we come to you, Yannick,' the director says in my ear.

I give a thumbs up to the camera to show I've heard and understood.

We've found a spot between the trees with a great view across the water to the police activity on the other side of the lake where several emergency vehicles are lined up. All day police divers have been in and out of the water. With the sun setting over the marshes and the reed beds swaying hypnotically in the breeze, it's a great shot. While I give an update on the latest on the search for Annie, Harry's going to zoom in and focus on the police activity.

I tried to come up with a new, significant angle, but I've got nothing. I called Kit's number a few times, but it kept going to his voicemail and he never returned my calls. I tried to persuade the police to give me an interview with the dive team working at the lake, but that was turned down. And still with no confirmed sightings of Annie, there's next to nothing new to say. I'm going to have to wing it and hope for the best.

I've told Tim the police announcement is still expected but that they've had to delay it for a few hours for operational reasons. He was surprisingly happy with that. My plan now is to reveal live on air that the police are close to a major breakthrough in the case.

It's not true. It's a figment of my desperate imagination, but it's the best I can do. And who's going to remember anyway? There's bound to be some kind of development or new line someone's turned up tomorrow and we'll all move on.

'Coming to you in two minutes,' the director says.

I straighten my tie and pull back my shoulders.

The rush of adrenaline in those few minutes before going live on air is better than any drug. It's a peculiar kind of nervous energy that focuses the mind and makes every nerve in your body tingle with anticipation. That feeling is especially heightened right now, knowing the untruths that are about to trip off my tongue. They're only small lies. Little whitish ones. And for all I know, the police could be on the verge of a breakthrough.

'Shit,' Harry hisses. The panic in his voice makes me glance over my shoulder. 'They're packing up.'

'What?'

'The police are leaving.'

A set of powerful spotlights that had been shining on the impromptu camp the dive team had set up, go black and one of the vehicles drives off. One by one, the divers climb into the back of a van. Its headlights come on and the sound of an engine starting up drifts across the lake.

In the studio, Imogen Moon delivers the headlines.

'Coming up in the programme tonight at six...'

Fuck. The beautiful live slot I promised Holly is falling down around us.

'Police on the verge of a major breakthrough in the hunt for missing Annie Warren...' Imogen continues in my ear.
