Marjory,

Thank you for letting me know you have arrived safely. I have fond memories of Greece from when I was young and your mom and I were living in Paris. You will enjoy it.

Dad

Jory had no idea how to even think about replying. This was probably the most intimate thing he had ever said to her—he never talked about Cindy or their past. Was her father trying to change that, somehow? Was he trying to connect with her? She had no idea how she felt about that.

Since that day when she was sixteen, Jory had let go of having a relationship with her father and his family with their old money and their conservative views.

Though there were a few Buchanan annual Christmas balls she’d attended at her grandparents’ mansion in Charleston. She’d actually taken Kate and Liz to the last one a few years back.

“Wow,” Kate had said, as they walked up to the old southern mansion. “You could have been like Scarlett O’Hara had you grown up here.”

Jory just stared at him and did not apologize. He looked at her for a moment and then turned away, but not before she saw a fleeting movement on his face that almost, just for a second, looked like a smile.

That had been one of the last times she’d seen him. She had no idea how to respond to his email so she marked it as unread and moved onto emailing her mom, giving her every detail of her trip so far. Normally Jory shared everything, but she stopped when it came to Shane. Jory had never felt for a man this way before and she wanted to… protect it. To just be hers. Not to be a St. James woman with a sizzler, but to simply be a girl with a crush on a boy. Nothing else. It was the first time in her life she’d omitted telling her mom something important. She felt momentarily guilty but hit send nonetheless.

She saved the email from Liz and Kate until last. They’d written it together, it seemed, based on the
