Arrow lurched forward and Silas let out a startled yell. Nora grabbed her skirt, ready to run to his rescue.

Silas reseated himself and took a full grip on the reins, his feet secure in the raised stirrups. Before she’d even taken a step, Arrow started the first turn.

Alarm morphed into surprise. If he ran that fast carrying Silas’s heavier frame, what more could he do with only her weight? She wasn’t considered a slight or petite woman, but she certainly weighed less than the bulky man hunkering on the sulky.

Arrow gained speed in the straightaway. Nora leaned forward. Impossible. His gait was perfect. His graceful neck arched as he trotted, still gaining speed.

If only she had a watch! Where was Amos when she needed him? She hadn’t thought to get her own timepiece. Arrow could be breaking records on his very first run.

Implications swarmed through her mind. If he broke a record at his qualifier, there’d be an immediate interest in Emberwild. Enough for her to start booking Arrow’s services during the week of the fair. Excitement built. She would need to figure out how to gain legal control of the horse. Soon. Otherwise all of her work would do nothing but benefit an uncle who would ship her off to be an old man’s second wife.

Nora scrambled over the railing to get out of the way as they made the final turn and headed back toward her. Arrow had settled into his element, hooves flying. He was always at his best when given the chance to run, and even with the restrictions of the harness and sulky, he appeared to be enjoying himself.

If he’d been a Thoroughbred, Nora had no doubt Arrow would have loved to run in the derby. His hooves churned up the soft dirt on the track, and in another instant, horse and driver sped past.

Nora pressed her hands to her cheeks. If he could run like that at the fair, she’d have no problem rejuvenating Emberwild. Heart swelling with possibilities, she watched them make another lap before Silas brought Arrow to a halt in front of her.

He leapt from the seat. “Did you see that?”

She couldn’t help grinning at his excitement. “He’s got to be the fastest horse in the state.” She rushed to him and grabbed his arms. “I’ll have no trouble finding him breeders now.”

“He’s certainly special.” Silas’s voice deepened, sending her pulse into a gallop.

Then he stepped back, breaking the intensity of the moment. He looked over his shoulder and chuckled. “Think I lost my hat.”

“You did indeed.” Nora laughed as she walked up to Arrow and stroked his neck. “Look at you. I always knew you’d fly like an arrow.”

Arrow bobbed his head, seeming pleased with the attention.

“How about we get those oats now, boy?”

Arrow nickered as though he understood exactly what Silas had said. She tilted her head. “Hmm. Seems making him work for his breakfast wasn’t such a bad idea after all.”

“You thought it was a bad idea?” He cocked a mischievous brow.
