Chapter 14

The delightful aroma of luscious white cake batter and creamy vanilla frosting filled the bakery as I arrived to begin my workday. Glancing at the schedule board for the week, I noted the birthday cake ordered by Jackson.

Aunt Claire worked to finish the special cake scheduled for pickup today. Her mixer buzzed from the kitchen, blending flour, sugar, and butter. She flashed me a smile and a wave as she turned the mixer off and reached for a spatula.

“The cake batter smells delicious. You may need to get that in the oven before I attempt to sample it,” I chuckled.

“Your cakes are just as scrumptious,” Aunt Claire answered with a broad smile.

“That means a great deal to me to hear you say that. What do you want to be written on the Today’s Special Board?”

Aunt Claire thought for a moment and then said, “Banana muffins.” Pleased with her choice, she stirred the batter with a spatula.

“Those will be perfect for this fall day,” I said and scurried to the front counter.

I wrote “Banana Muffins” on the dry-erase board before turning it around to face incoming customers.

At ten o’clock, the morning rush slowed to a halt, so I left the counter to check on customers seated at tables. All available seats were filled to the brim inside as well as outside with bakery regulars. Fall break had arrived, so teachers and students enjoyed the week off. If this weather continues on as today, it will be the most perfect fall break ever.

The women’s club, Tiaras and Boas, sat conducting their weekly meeting outside. The older ladies enjoyed gardening and met each week to discuss the particular act of kindness they would bestow on some individual’s yard. Tiaras and Boas loved to spruce up yards and were often seen planting a rose bush or other flowering plant in some fortunate person’s yard. You could easily spot the group at the bakery in their usual meeting attire, with their bright pink boas draped around their neck and shoulders. Each member wore an individual tiara that I secretly imagined remained from their pageant days. Now, that would make an interesting story.

As I approached their table, the ladies spoke of their latest project to the community at Devine Designs. They felt the front of the building needed a bit of sprucing up, so they phoned Amanda, who was more than happy to accept the contribution. They planted a few rose bushes, potted lavender, and a fall mix all around her shop.

“I heard Griffin Ritchie has moved back to town,” Marilyn said after a bite of banana muffin.

“It seems there was a disagreement between Griffin and Mr. Harlow about what the job title included,” Abigail said as she raised her eyebrows.

Beatrice took a sip of her cappuccino and said, “The Harlow family clearly expected Griffin to marry their daughter, Giselle.

“I heard it said that Griffin will not be forced into an arranged marriage,” Lydia chimed in.

“But I heard it straight from Eileen Ritchie’s lips that Griffin will marry Giselle Harlow,” Evelyn said.
