Chapter Twenty

When Howard leaves the office, I stand up and look out of the window. The air conditioning maintains the office at a clement temperature, if I open the window hot, sticky air will rush in. I see Glyn’s reflection; does he hate me? Does he actually hate me? I can’t hear the street sounds below through the triple glazing; it’s like a TV show with the volume turned off. People jostling on the pavement, rush, rush, rush. What for? Why? Where’s the emergency? A woman in far too high shoes rushes along, carrying packages, trying to navigate the traffic. ‘Do you think,’ I say cautiously without turning round but watching his reflection, ‘any of this would be happening if Megan hadn’t started work here?’

There’s a long pause.

My eyes stay with the crazy woman zig-zagging through the traffic, inside I feel bleak. Where is all this headed? And why have I little control over what is happening to me?

‘But she did start,’ his voice is stark.

What I want is support, but it looks like he is going to accept this situation as is.

‘Megan didn’t make you take the diazepam. You did that all by yourself.’

I flop into my chair suddenly exhausted, shaking my head. How can I make him believe me? It is as if my life is not my own but a puppet and someone else is pulling the strings.

‘No, I didn’t.’

He flinches.

‘What can I say, Glyn. I can’t explain any of this, I have no idea how, apart from what I’ve said about my account being hacked — you even told Howard the same.’ While talking I go through the process of changing my password on my computer. I click confirm.

His thunderous scowl speaks volumes. ‘I know you don’t want to hear this, but I’m going to lend a hand with this case.’

‘What? Definitely, not,’ I say with conviction.

‘It doesn’t matter what you say, I outrank you here, Tina. And if it’s not me, you can bet Howard is thinking the same thing. Would you prefer that? You need to get yourself together. I can’t figure out what’s going on with you. But seriously, get your shit together and throw those bloody pills away.’

‘Just what do you mean by that?’

‘You get the picture. You can probably kiss your partnership goodbye, that’s for sure. And if you’re not mindful your career too. You’re a mess. I can’t believe you are taking those pills again.’ He stands up to leave. ‘I don’t know what the fuck is going on with you but sort it out because from where I’m standing it’s a mess.’

‘OK! OK!’ I want him to shut up. ‘But—’

Glyn holds up his hand. ‘Stop right there. Remember the email came from your account. There’s no altering that. You’ve changed the password now. Good. There shouldn’t be any more emails incorrectly sent out unless sent by you. Should there?’

I snort. ‘Unless somebody,’ and by somebody I clearly mean Megan and he knows it, ‘jumps on while I am away from my desk.
