Any apprehension I was feeling about watching a bullfight dissolves within minutes. The whole experience is so gripping, I find it strangely soothing. Watching each of the matadors take their turn dancing with death makes me reflect on my experience in Barcelona, fighting off my attacker. The bullfights seem strangely symbolic of the fact that all over Europe, people are fighting against a wild beast for their right to exist. Iâm proud to be a part of that fight.
The matador with the top billing, Juanito Belmonte, is particularly inspiring and Iâm unable to contain my excitement when he comes back from what looks like certain death, and I leap to my feet, screaming my relief. Even when Santiago grabs me in a celebratory hug, Iâm unable to stop smiling.
âSo, how does Belmonte measure up to your Mexican fighters back home?â Santiago asks as we prepare to leave.
âHmm, heâs almost as good,â I reply.
Santiago grins. âWell, before this night is over, I hope to have won a victory for Madrid. Letâs go to El British.â
âEl British?â
âThe British Institute. My friend Walter has organized a night of flamenco and Romani guitars. Something you donât get back at home in Mexico.â
I smile at him and nod. Itâs only when weâre back in Javierâs car that I remember my father telling me about the flamenco dancers he liked to watch as a kid. Does Santiago really not know that they love flamenco in Mexico or is he trying to trap me? I shoot him a sideways glance and catch him smiling at me. Hopefully, my cover story remains intact, but I need to be more careful.
