Chapter Seventeen

Tessa’s phone vibrated against her leg, and this time it was more than a text. She told herself to be a window and let the irritation at being interrupted when she didn’t want to be flow right through her. If she had truly wanted to disconnect, she could’ve left her phone in the cottage.

At the same time, being out on the beach without a way to get in touch with someone should she need help brought fear right into her gut. So she’d brought the phone, determined to ignore it.

She’d succeeded so far, but she tugged the device from the pocket on the side of her thigh and found her sister’s name there. She frowned at the letters, then swiped on the call. “Hey, Janey,” she said though she didn’t really feel like talking to her sister. She’d apologized and asked Tessa what she was doing that day already this morning, and the non-aggressive message had unnerved her.

“Cole got in a car with Caroline,” she said, her voice rushing over itself. “Where is she? Do you know? Have you heard from her?”

Tessa’s steps slowed to a stop. “No,” she said slowly. Her brain buzzed, trying to make dots connect that seemed impossibly far apart. “Why would he get in a car with her?”

“I don’t know.” Janey made a noise Tessa couldn’t classify instantly, and then it became more like a sob. “Sean said he got a call, said her name, and then only a minute or two later, I saw him get in her car.”

“How do you know it was her?” Tessa asked. Janey hadn’t met Caroline.

“Sean heard him say her name!” Janey shouted at her, and Tessa pulled the phone from her ear. She didn’t need to go deaf on such a glorious morning.

“All right,” Sean said through the scuffles coming through the line when Tessa put the phone back to her ear. “Tessa, we’re sorry about that.”

“Why do you put up with her?” Tessa asked, and she wasn’t sure if she needed to answer or if she’d asked Sean.

He ignored her and said, “Did you ever see Caroline’s car?”

“No,” Tessa said, her lungs filling with cement. It was so dang hard to breathe, and she hated feeling like she needed a box of wine and all the silence in the world. “She came on foot through the squall, knocking doors, desperate for help, remember?”

“No,” Sean said. “I haven’t heard a word about this Caroline Fyfe woman until this morning.” His voice lowered with every word he spoke. “Janey’s freaking out.”

“She always freaks out,” Tessa said. She wasn’t sure why she felt so…discompassionate toward her sister today. She didn’t usually, but she was also ready to stand up for herself. She had needs and cares too, and Janey had never given any thought to those. Even when they were together, Janey spent much of her time on her phone, talking to someone more interesting than Tessa, or looking at something more interesting than conversing with Tessa.

“This is real, Tessa,” Sean said.
