Powers of the Mind
After informing David about my intentions to learn more about meditation, he took me into his bedroom to get a book that he felt was the best ever written on the subject of mind control. Visiting David’s bedroom was like visiting your local landfill. He had so much junk and garbage on the floor that there could have been a dead body in there and he would never have known it. I didn’t know how he lived in that filth. As soon as I walked in, I’d start itching all over and as soon as I left, I either showered or sprayed myself with Lysol. Next to David, even Lily Munster would look like Susie Homemaker. The guy was an absolute, unadulterated slob.
After David rooted through half a ton of trash, he found the book he was seeking. The book was Powers of Mind by Adam Smith.
“Judd, you have to read this book. It’s the best book I’ve ever read on meditation and mind control—the best.”
“I thought you said my book was the best?”
“I said that so you would invite me down here. This book is the best. Yours is second best.”
“Then why didn’t you go visit Adam Smith?” I asked.
“Don’t be ignorant. He’d never have me. He’s too famous and important.”
“If he saw the way you keep your room, he’d never have you. I can tell you that.”
“Don’t be so sensitive. Just read the book. You’ll love it. I promise.”
“Okay, I’ll read the book, but I’d like to know a few things before I do. If meditation is so great, why are you here trying to learn about mind-control techniques?”
“That’s easy: for the same reason you want to learn about meditation. I want to expand myself. Meditation is one weapon. I want as many weapons in my mental arsenal as I can get.”
“I can accept that answer, but what I would like to know is how has meditation helped you?”
“The research conducted on meditation has found that meditation can relieve feelings of stress and tension while producing a relaxation response. I’d say that meditation has helped me in that respect, both in my everyday life and in athletic competition. Where it’s helped me most, though, is in focusing my mind and energies. Through meditation, I’ve developed the ability to focus my attention on the present situation. By doing this, I am able to reserve my strength for when I need it, and then, I’m able to channel all that strength to the specific muscle group while the rest of my muscles remain relaxed. For example, when I’m wrestling, if I grab my opponent with my right hand, I’m able to focus all my muscle power into my hand while the rest of my body remains relaxed. In other words, I’m getting great efficiency and effect from my energies by being able to focus on the specific target.
