THIRTEEN

“What do you want, girl?” Tixa asked. Jules had her translator in, allowing his gruff words to make sense.

“I’m interested in finding a friend of mine,” she told him.

They were in a private cabana at the edge of the Bazaar. It was big, overlooking the entire market, and the sounds of the day carried to them, along with countless different scents. Local women came and went, bringing food and drink in an endless stream.

Tixa downed a couple glasses of a bright pink beverage and didn’t once offer Jules anything.

“What does this have to do with me?” Tixa waved a man in, and the guy strode to his boss’ side, a long gun at his hip. He whispered in his ear, and Tixa smiled, his ugly face even more gruesome with the gesture. “It seems you already have friends with you.”

Suma and Zarin entered the cabana, their heads down. Zarin had a bruise on her eye, and Suma rubbed her forearm, as if she’d been hurt. Rage filled Jules, and she almost exploded with anger. It took all her energy to remain visibly calm. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“These aren’t your allies?” Tixa motioned at the two ladies.

“Nope. I’m here to locate a man…”

“With a snout like hers?” Tixa grabbed Suma’s wrist, dragging her closer. “What are you three doing at my Bazaar?”

“I told you…” Jules’ head spun as Tixa struck her.

“Touch me again, and you’ll regret it,” she whispered. “Let Suma go, and maybe I won’t kill you.”

Tixa released Suma and laughed. It started in his chest and traveled to his expansive belly. Soon he was bellowing with hilarity, like she’d told the universe’s best joke. “You know, I needed that.”

Jules had heard enough. She started to tap into her powers, but they were blocked. She lifted a finger, attempting to shoot him with a beam of energy, but there was nothing.

“What are you doing, girl? You come here and point at me?” Tixa swung again, but this time, Jules dodged it.

She saw a crystal at the end of his gaudy necklace flare up when he neared her. “No way,” she muttered. It was the same material that old Professor Thompson had used to steal her abilities to take over the Academy when she was a first-year student. Suma had been working there too, and Jules saw the moment Suma spotted the stone.

“Why don’t you leave us alone?” Suma called, trying to steal his attention.

Jules stepped back, hoping to avoid the crystal’s range, but two huge guards were behind her, dragging her to Tixa. He laughed again and came closer, his breath rancid. Bits of meat clung to his teeth, and she gagged. He found this even more amusing.

Tixa touched her cheek with a gnarled fingernail. “Who is the man you seek?”

Jules needed to change trajectories. “His name is Sarlun, and he’s a traitor. He must pay for his sins.” She glanced at Suma, hoping her words didn’t offend her.

“Then I’m happy to tell you he’s probably dead.”

“Probably?” Zarin dared ask.
