Janice had seen the big snakes from a distance, but now Ervin had sent her to get them. All she knew for sure was that they had taken up residence in a copse of trees in the center of the property, and she was nervous. Ervin said they were friendly, but they were big, and she’d been afraid of snakes ever since one bit her when she was a child.

Ervin had paid for everyone who worked on the land to have translators implanted, so she would at least be able to talk to them without using a tablet for translation. Not that she looked forward to talking to them at all.

“Hello!” she called out as she stood at the edge of the tree line.

She checked her GPS for the third time to make sure she was in the right place.

“Helloooo!” she called out again, louder.

Suddenly, five ‘small’ snakes emerged from the weeds and undergrowth around her and hissed. She looked around, realized she was surrounded, and screamed.

The hatchling Dendros—green mambas to her—hissed in what her translator recognized as giggling. “Gotcha!” one of them said. She wasn’t sure which one.

“Very good, little ones, but do try not to scare the human to death,” De’Sirizso said as he lowered himself to a low branch of a nearby tree.

Janice jumped, backed up quickly, and screamed again when she saw the 20-foot adult only five feet from her head.

“Back off hatchlings. Give her some space,” De’Sirizso said. “Take your time, human, then you may tell us what you want.”

The hatchlings moved into the underbrush, toward the trees, and disappeared from her view.

She took a minute to catch her breath and try to calm down, while the large mamba lowered himself from the tree and coiled on the ground. “Ervin sent me…” she began and stopped to clear her throat, which now hurt from screaming. “Ervin sent me to tell you there’s some rats in the grain storage house.”

“Rats. Those are the small rodent mammals, yes?”

She nodded and gulped when she noticed the large bulge about halfway down the snake’s coils and took a few steps back. “Yeah. That’s them.”

“You have nothing to fear, human. Do you have a name, or shall I just call you human? I am De’Sirizso.”

“Oh. Um. Yeah. I’m Janice. Janice Small.”

“Yes, you are small. There is no need to explain this.”

“No, I mean, yes, but that’s my name. My last name is Small.”

“Oh, yes. You humans use two names. Odd, but that is your way. Very well, show me where this storage facility is. It will be good practice for our hatchlings.”

Janice pointed. “It’s over there a way.”

“Perhaps you could show me on your screen exactly where it is?”

Janice gulped again. “Yeah. Um. Just a minute.” She turned and went back to her four-wheeler and grabbed her tablet to pull up the location. She walked back over to where she had been standing and held it up and pointed. “It’s right there.”

De’Sirizso tasted the air with his tongue. “I can sense you are afraid, Janice.
