Robertaâs return text praised the ladies for noticing the letter and getting the contact information to the sheriff as quickly as possible. Maybe it had been an unorthodox move, but Kate took heart in that, in the larger scheme of things, theyâd done what was right.
She hurried through the rest of her cleaning duties with a lighter heart. Bev was right; this wasnât the time to let up on the search. That envelope was the perfect example of how quickly the situation could change, how suddenly a solid clue could fall right into their laps. Or, in this instance, Maeâs mail case.
Milton stayed on Kateâs mind as she worked the counter that morning, and not only because of the new clue the carriers uncovered. Thanks to the flyer on the post officeâs bulletin board, the old manâs shy smile was on full display in the lobby.
The âHave you seen me?â plea across the top of the poster deepened Kateâs resolve to stick with the case. If everyone in the community stayed vigilant, and passed on anything that seemed unusual or noteworthy, it could bring the authorities one step closer to solving this mystery.
Kate hadnât worked the post officeâs counter for several weeks; the last time had been just days before her wild afternoon at Miltonâs farm. So she wondered if he would be a topic of conversation and concern. But by noon, there hadnât been one word.
How was that possible? If Jasper was telling the truth, Milton had been gone three weeks as of tomorrow. Every day that passed without word from the old man was one more sign something wasnât right. And it had been only six days since the sheriff raised the caseâs public profile. Were people really so caught up in their own lives that Milton had already been forgotten?
Despite everyoneâs dependence on digital communication, the post officeâs bulletin board was still a popular hangout for notices on everything from lost pets to church suppers and kids looking to mow lawns for extra cash.
Maybe that was the problem, Kate decided during one lull in the action. Several new flyers had crowded in on Miltonâs real estate. She took a few moments to rearrange the board, remove posters for now-past activities, and straighten the items that were left. Milton stayed front and center, right where his notice could catch peopleâs attention.
The afternoon brought a steady stream of visitors to the counter, but next weekâs sweet corn festival and the start of school at the end of the month were at the top of customersâ minds.
âFifteen thousand ears of corn, can you believe it?â one man asked Kate. âWhy, thatâs so much, it has to be some kind of record.â
Kate shrugged. With Grandpa Wayne so involved in the festival, she recalled years where the haul was even higher than that. âWell, if five thousand people show up, like last year, thatâs three ears per person. Either way, itâs going to be a great time.â
âAnd that band!â The woman behind him was eager to join the conversation.
