Town hall and museum

Great Oak St, SY18 6BN • Museum Tues, Thurs & Fri 11am–1pm & 2–4pm, Sat 11am–2pm • £1 • 01686 413777

The town hall was originally built as a temperance hotel to challenge the boozy Trewythen Arms, now the smart Trewythen Hotel, opposite. Nowadays the complex houses an eclectic museum that offers a diverting collection, from old local prints and mementos, including pictures of boomtown Dylife, to a stuffed two-headed lamb born nearby in 1914.

A plaque by the entrance to the Trewythen Hotel commemorates Llanidloes as an unlikely-seeming place of industrial and political unrest, when, in April 1839, Chartists stormed the building, dragging out and beating up special constables who had been dispatched here in a futile attempt to suppress the political fervour of the local flannel weavers.
