The Vatican

On the west bank of the Tiber, directly across from Rome’s historic centre, the Vatican City has been an independent sovereign state since 1929. St Peter, considered by Roman Catholics to be the first of the popes, is believed to have been martyred and buried in the area that the Romans called the Vatican Field. Subsequently, a church dedicated to Peter was built by the Emperor Constantine over his tomb, and the Vatican palaces developed nearby. Stretching north from St Peter’s, these papal palaces are now home to the Vatican Museums – one of the largest, most compelling, and perhaps most exhausting museum complexes in the world. The Castel Sant’Angelo, a huge fortress that was once a refuge for the popes in times of danger, is also well worth visiting, while east of the Vatican the well-heeled Prati district has some of the city’s best restaurants.
