A solitary lakeside outpost on the northern peripheries of the plateau, Finse comprises nothing more than its station and a few isolated buildings, hunkered down against the howling winds that rip across the Hardangervidda in wintertime. There’s snow here from the beginning of November until well into June, and the cross-country skiing is particularly enthusiastic, with locals skiing off from the station in every direction. You can rent cross-country ski equipment at the Finse 1222 Hotel, but you’ll need to reserve. After the snow has melted, cycling and hiking take over.
