Piano di Sorrento

Northeast of Sant’Agnello, PIANO DI SORRENTO has a cliff-top esplanade with beetling views from which a road zigzags down to the Marina di Cassano, a refreshingly workaday harbour with a short stretch of dark-grey sandy beach at each end. At the western end of the esplanade, Villa Fondi makes the most of its excellent location by hosting weddings, concerts and other functions in its lush gardens and sumptuous terraces.

Meta

Occupying the far end of Sorrento’s plain, before the road rises to bend around the cliffs of the peninsula, META has a long-standing nautical history and is known for both its shipbuilding industry and the sea captains it has provided to the Italian navy over the years. Meta is worth visiting for Alimuri beach, two decent-sized stretches of grey sand on a small spit sticking out from the high-sided cliffs of the bay. A lift can deliver you from the road above, or you can drive down to a small car park. A little further along, a few small stretches of beach, each with parking, are tucked right up against the cliff-face.

Arrival and departure Sorrento and around

By train Sorrento’s train station is in the centre of town, a 5min walk from the main Piazza Tasso along busy Corso Italia. Sant’Agnello, Piano and Meta each have stops on the Circumvesuviana line.

Getting around

By mini train You can walk pretty much everywhere in Sorrento, but if you want a bit of easy orientation, it’s worth taking one of the mini train tours that leave every 35min from Piazza Tasso (daily: March & April 9am–9pm; May–Sept 9am–midnight; Oct 9am–10pm; charge; http://sorrentotraintour.com); tours last about half an hour.

By bus There are several (orange) bus routes around the town and surrounding area, including line A between Meta, Piano, Sant’Agnello, Sorrento itself and out to Massa Lubrense; lines B and C from Meta to Piano, Sant’Agnello, Sorrento train station, Piazza Tasso and Marina Piccola; and line D between Marina Grande and Piazza Tasso.

By scooter You can rent scooters and mopeds at Jolly Service & Rent, just outside the old town at Corso Italia 3, and also just off the eastern end of Corso Italia at Via degli Aranci 180 (http://jollyrent.com).
