The beaches

Strange as it may seem, Sorrento isn’t particularly well provided with beaches. In the town itself there are several small sandy strips of lido at the Marina San Francesco (a couple of which are free; others charge an entrance fee, usually around €12 including a sunbed); they are accessible from the Villa Comunale gardens by a path or by lift (€1), or from nearby Marina Piccola harbour. To get to Marina Piccola take the steps from Il Buco restaurant and then follow the steps that shadow Via Luigi di Maio to the bottom.

Alternatively, there are the rocks and a tiny, crowded strip of sand (all free) at Marina Grande, Sorrento’s pleasant fishing harbour, ten minutes’ walk or a short bus ride west of Piazza Tasso. If you decide to walk, either follow the city walls from the end of Via San Nicola, or take the road that edges past the Bellevue Syrene hotel, off the Villa Comunale; both end up at the same flight of steps that lead down to the east end of Marina Grande’s bay, just above the Da Emilia restaurant.

Further east are a few more beaches, such as Marinella beach at Sant’Agnello and the strips of sand around Meta. A few hundred metres west of town below the Bristol and Désirée hotels there is another small, stony beach – a good choice during the heat of the day as it is quite shady in the afternoon (€5 entry, not including sunbeds and umbrellas). Though also somewhat lacking in sand, the beaches to the west near Capo are perhaps the most attractive.
